What is an IRD?

An IRD (Image Replacement Document) or a Substitute Check is a image copy of a check that includes a machine readable MICR line that will be the practical and legal equivalent of a paper check.  They will be printed by financial institutions and clearing houses in conjunction with the Check 21 Act that becomes effective October 28, 2004.
